If you are not a very practically-minded DIY expert, it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose when you need to replace or repair your garage door. Do you want to wait until it’s hanging off its hinges and the problem has gone too far before you change it? Of course not. We do not want any unforeseen accidents from a collapsing garage door. Here are some pointers so you can get a good idea when or when not to replace or to repair it.

The Deteriorating Appearance of your Garage Door

Appearance is everything. The obvious signs that your garage door needs replacing or at least repairing, is when it’s starting to look a bit jaded. If your house looks fantastic but your garage door has become unattractive looking, it has an effect on the appearance of your whole property. If your door’s appearance can be improved by a lick of paint, that will be the most inexpensive route to take. Proper garage door maintenance is essential.

Garage Door Won’t Open

One of the most common problems with a garage door is when it becomes difficult to open it properly. If there is faulty wiring or an electronic problem with your garage door not opening, that can sometimes be easily repaired by replacing batteries. Sometimes it’s that simple. If your door still doesn’t open, maybe something is blocking the sensors, so make sure you check those. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you will have to look into asking for expert help to fix it or replacing your garage door.

Garage Door Coming off its Tracks

If your garage door has come off its tracks, a spot of garage door repair will be needed. You don’t often have to replace the entire garage door when it goes off the rails, but you might need to replace certain parts which are less expensive than replacing the whole door. If the parts you need are expensive and culminate at high costs, it might be better in the long run to purchase a new garage door instead of repairing the garage door.

Your Garage Door is Wasting Energy

Newer electric garage doors are much more energy efficient than the older varieties. If the doors on your garage open and close very slowly, they are letting in massive amounts of air into your home. This could then also have an impact on your energy bills. Worn garage doors can also suffer from weather damage, especially at the bottom, and will, therefore, let in more air. Replacing your garage doors with a new and more efficient model is something you should seriously consider.

There are many things to consider when deciding whether to replace or repair your garage doors. If your doors are old and look worn, and are letting in lots of outside air, maintenance might not be enough. A new garage door will improve the appearance of your house, help you to make savings on electricity bills, and will be smoother and easier to use.
