Maintenance Checklist for Garage Doors

Posted on 27 May 2022

Like anything else in your home, your garage door needs to be maintained to stay working properly and efficiently. Whilst they’re built to be robust and weatherproof, garage door checks are still vital for ensuring your door remains secure and can withstand prolonged use for years to come.

If you don’t maintain your door regularly, you’ll no doubt find yourself having to carry out tedious and often avoidable garage door repairs, and you may even have to replace the door long before its due date.

On top of this, an undermaintained garage door can affect the overall aesthetic of your home, and it can also end up costing you money in the way of increased bill expenditure. So, to keep your door working as it should be, it’s important you carry out a few basic maintenance checks from time to time.

In this blog, we’re going to detail a basic garage door maintenance checklist, as well as why it’s so vital you do regular garage door checks.

Maintenance Checklist for Garage Doors

Before we dive into the checklist, let’s first explore why it’s so important to maintain your garage door. The main reason is to ensure it remains functional and can perform its job as it should, but that isn’t all.

Many people’s garages are attached to their houses which means they play a role in property security. If your garage is damaged, your home’s security could be compromised, leaving you vulnerable to intruders.

On top of this, a lot of heat from your house can be lost through an inefficient or damaged garage door, meaning you’ll notice your winter bills are exceedingly high. If the door breaks, you could also be looking at some costly garage door repairs, too, further pushing your household budget.

With some basic garage door checks, you can keep your door working like new for decades, keep your home secure and safe, and ensure your home is heat efficient and budget-friendly.

Garage Door Maintenance Checklist

Now you’re familiar with why maintenance is essential, let’s go over the checks you need to do.

  •       Look and listen – if your garage door is electric, make sure you step out and open and close the door outside of your car at least once a week, making sure to listen out for any grinding, scratching, squeaking, or scraping noises. Make sure to also watch the door as it slides along the track, ensuring it doesn’t get caught on anything.
  •       Check the screws and bolts – it’s to be expected that bolts and screws might come loose over time, especially if you use your garage door frequently. Make a note to check and tighten bolts and screws every six months or so to make sure nothing falls off.
  •       Lubricate moving parts – oiling your garage door is essential to preventing friction and associated damage. With this in mind, oil the moving parts once a year.

Professional Garage Door Repairs

Whilst you can carry out basic garage maintenance yourself, such as painting the door, checking the lock, and lubricating the track, it’s best to leave the majority of maintenance up to a professional. Garage doors are heavy and can be dangerous if tampered with, so once a year, call in a professional to give your garage door a service and keep it in full working order.
