Everything to Know About Garage Door Maintenance

There are a few different ways you can maintain your garage door, with each method depending on the type and material.

Electric Garage Door Maintenance

First of all, let’s look at electric garage doors as they’re becoming increasingly more common. Many people assume that because they’re electric they require no maintenance at all.

This simply isn’t true. They won’t require as much looking after as a manual garage door, but they do require some degree of effort on your part; namely in the way of running a damp cloth along the inside of the track when the door is open. This will clear away any debris and ensure the door continues to operate problem-free.

Up and Over Garage Door Maintenance

On the other hand, if you have an up and over garage door, you will need to lubricate the spring mechanisms to ensure the rollers can operate smoothly and efficiently. This will entail oiling the inside tracks.

Wooden Garage Door Maintenance

Now, onto general maintenance of different types of doors. If you have a wooden garage door or one that is made from timber, you’ll want to rinse it with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth. This will keep it looking clean.

If you notice any splits in your wooden garage door, make sure to use a wood filler to fill them in and prevent any further issues. Also, make sure the wood is treated.

Metal Garage Door Maintenance

Metal garage doors also need to be wiped down to stay looking their best. To do this, use a soft cloth or a sponge to avoid making any scratches in the metal and use a gentle hose to rinse the door at the end. Do not use a pressure washer as this can damage the paint.

If your paintwork is a bit shabby, you can easily touch it up with the correct paint and priming technique.
